Dad Cameron

Prime minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha forgot to take their 8-year old daughter home after they had a Sunday lunch in a pub. Downing Street reported that the girl spent 15 minutes alone at the Plough Inn at Cadsden, before picked up by her parents and that Mr. and Mrs. Cameron were “distraught” when they found out the girl did not come back home with them. The cause of the incident was a miss assuming between the parents. While leaving the pub Mr. Cameron turned home alone in a car with his bodyguards and thought his wife would go home with the children in the other car.

I know I am participating now but I just want to say that I think this happening is sooo overdone. The article is only published a couple of hours ago and is has already had over 700 comments! The incident, which is this case, happened to the prime minister is not pleasant for the parents as well as for their daughter but as said in the article, those things can happen. It does not say anything about the parenting skills or the love for their child. This is just awkward because it happened to a father who is by chance the prime minister.

Suicidal US Military

The number of suicides among US soldiers has risen over the last ten years with an increase of 18% compared to last year. In the first 155 days of 2012 there have been 154 suicides among active troops, about double the number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan. There are a couple of possible reasons for the rise of suicides, for example post-traumatic stress, misuse of drugs and financial problems. Despite the effort to encourage making soldiers look for mental help the number of suicides is still rising. This is due to the taboo of seeking for help among military. They think seeking for mental help is a sign of weakness and may effect a possible promotion.

This news is horrible to read but does not come as a big surprise to be honest.  US military, and all military in a war zone like Afghanistan are probably damaged for the rest of their life. Not all military can cope with their experiences and therefore should get mental help from a psychiatrist. To get over the pride thing all military should go every once in a time mandatorily to a psychiatrist. Still I do not think this is the solution, because I think the only solution to his problem is to get all troops back from Afghanistan and end this mission.

Lucky Boy

Ethan Fidler, a 10 year old British boy was sent by the British National Health Service for six weeks to Florida. This whole trip has cost upwards to £50,000 but was absolutely necessary for the boy to stay alive, cause; a brain tumor, a very aggressive cancer called anaplastic ependymoma. The trip from Ethan Fidler provoked commotion by cancer patients in the US. In the US around 40 to 50 million people are uninsured because they can not bring up the money whereby one in six of the cancer patients have medical debts up to thousands of dollars.

First of all, I understand the commotion of the cancer patients in the US though you could say it is their own recital to be or not to be insured but the decision to be insured could mean a life with debts. The US health service is a mess and it is not fair to citizens in the US that they have to pay more for the same services than citizens from Britain. But second, the US has the means to help this boy from Britain, so I think it is best to help each other and unite forces.

Laboratory Organ

The first transplant operation with an organ wholly grown in a laboratory have performed. A 36 year old man, who has a new windpipe, is still recovering after the surgeons operated him. The organ in created by the man’s own stem cells. Surgeons used the stem cells from windpipes before but used the collagen skeletons of donations.

Jeej! Long live the science! This is a great founding. It saves people’s life. The article said that it is hard to find organs for little children so with this founding that can be repaired. I think this is just the start of organs wholly grown in laboratory and in a couple of years scientists can make all organs. It is also a good solution to the short of donors worldwide, though I do think they should use the organs from donors as much as they can, growing organs but be expensive. And I quite like the idea of making use of “second hand” organs.

Speaker' Corned: Children Growing Weaker

Children in the UK are becoming weaker, less muscular and are unable to do physical task previous generations found simple. The research mostly focused on the 10-year olds. The can do fewer sit ups and are less able to hang on bars in the gym. Their arm strength has declined as well as the ability to grab an object. The loss of physical power is probably due to the change in activities. Playing computer games replaced the outdoor activities like rope skipping and tree climbing.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2011/may/21/children-weaker-computers-replace-activity

Honestly, I do not think this is a big problem. Lately, the people keep growing older and I do not think this is necessarily a good thing. The loss in physical power would not do so much harm that children cannot come out of their bed so it would not have a huge impact on their life. To me it is a shame that children prefer playing computer games. Being outdoors sounds like much more fun than sitting behind your desk on the computer. Outdoors, children will play with other children and this is good for their social skills. I do not like the idea that children will always play with the computer and do not experience the real life, not because of their health.

“It may sound silly, but going on holiday with blind people opens your eyes."

Lately there are trips organized for blind people. A group of about twenty people went to southern Italy. Half of the people in the group are blind or visually impaired and the other half of the group is fully sighted. The trip is organized to show blind people around by fully sighted people. Every fully sighted person has a blind person on the arm to help them with obstacles and also to entertain them.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2011/jun/30/blind-people-travel-traveleyes

I really like the idea of special trips for blind people. I feel sad for the people who are blind, I cannot imagine how it is to be blind but I think you will really miss something. By letting full sighted people help the blind people personally they will get to know much more and they do not feel like a third wheel. They will have the full attention but then positive. The sighted people were also very positive about the trip and I understand. Helping blind people is a thankful job, one even said it was an eye-opener to go on a trip with blind people.

Lack of support causes student misbehavior

Parents are responsible for the way students behave at school. Students perform better when their parents support them. Most schoolchildren do not turn up at school with basic materials like a pen but do bring their mobile phones, Ipods and other gadgets. Besides, the gadgets are disturbing during the classes. Another result of the lack of support is the lack of students' discipline. According to two third of all teachers the main reason for the misbehaviour of pupils is the lack of support of their parents. School ministers Nick Gibb wants to make an end of this bad behaviour.

Parents should ensure that their children turn up at school with the right equipment and motivate their children to participate in class and do their homework on time, especially on primary school. The article says nothing about the age of the pupils they are talking about therefore I have a broad opinion. If they are talking about students older than 14 I do not think that parents are equally responsible for their children’s behaviour. At that age students are not that keen on their parent’s well-meant advices and should be responsible for their own materials. Students older than 14 have to be responsible for their behaviour.
